The Impressive Church Door Cove

Post image

I was happy to be able to finally get back to the coast, I had missed it so much. To make my first full day out and about at Church Door Cove was a good choice. This cove is stunning just with the beach, but then add the amazing geological beauty too and you have a perfect setting for a perfect day.

The Dams of Elan Valley

Post image

The Elan Valley forms part of the rugged Cambrian Mountains, and is home to many dams, reservoirs and wildlife.

The dams and reservoirs were built by the Victorians to supply clean water to Birmingham. There are four dams on the river Elan; Craig Goch, Pen y Garreg, Garreg Ddu, and Caban Coch. The river Claerwen has the newest, and largest Claerwen dam followed by the unfinished Dol y Mynach dam. Each of the dams and reservoirs are unique in their design.

The Elan Estate is 180 square kilometres and falls within the Cambrian Mountains Environmentally Sensitive Area, The Estate also forms the major part of the 30,000 hectare Elenydd-Mallaen Special Protection Area under the European Wild Birds Directive. It also has three Special Areas of Conservation under the European Habitats and Species Directive. One is for the woodlands and two are for the upland bogs, which together total over 6,000 hectares.

Elen Valley has been awarded an International Dark Sky Park Award which helps the many nocturnal mammals in the Claerwen and Elan Valleys to thrive.

A Wander Along the Beach from Coppet Hall to Saundersfoot

Post image

Saundersfoot was known in medieval times as Llandussyllt and then St Issels, after the parish church of St Issels which nestles in the wooded valley half a mile inland to the north. It did not become Saundersfoot until Elizabethan times and the harbour was built in 1834. Saundersfoot is one of Pembrokeshire's most popular beaches, stretching for half a mile northwards from the harbour to Coppet Hall point. The beach usually attains the Blue Flag Award and consists of fine sand with a few outcrops of rock.

Coppet Hall is at the northern end of Saundersfoot Bay and is a beach of sand, backed by some shingle. The name 'Coppet Hall' derives from 'Coal Pit haul' - a reference to its earlier mining days. A former colliery tramway which ran from Saundersfoot harbour to Stepaside is now a foot /cycle path, linking Coppet Hall to Saundersfoot through a 70 yard tunnel.

One late August morning I parked at Coppet hall just before dawn, the tide was completely out, which meant I could walk right along the beach without using the tunnel. This is one of my favourite areas of coastline, from Wiseman's Bridge right around to Tenby and at dawn on a late summer's morning, there is no place I would rather be.

St Govan's Chapel to the Green Bridge of Wales

Post image

Related

The St. Govan’s Chapel to the Green Bridge of Wales section of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path is a rugged and wild coastal landscape.

From the car park at St. Govan’s we headed to, the holy site of St. Govan’s Chapel.

This 13th century chapel is believed to be the home and final resting place of the mysterious Celtic Saint Govan, who died here in 586 AD.

Stone steps lead down to the chapel. There’s a legend that if you count the steps on the way down to the chapel and then recount the steps on the way back up, the numbers never match. For my Grandson unfortunately they did, but he is a logical and mathematical type of boy.

Back on the coast path we passed a military gateway from where a rough stony track heads westwards. Although the official advice is to keep to this track on the range, I followed the pathway which runs across the clifftops.

Huntsman’s Leap is a narrow rock chasm with massive sheer sided cliffs. The name originates from the local legend of a huntsman who rode his horse to jump the gap and having successfully done so, he looked back into the chasm and promptly dropped dead from shock.

Flimston Bay has a secluded beach with rock pillars, which is a beautiful.

The Green Bridge of Wales is a truly impressive limestone arch and pedestal rock feature and would once have had a double arch span but  continuous weathering and erosion from the elements over millennia have reduced it to the present form. The pedestal rock nearby is all that remains of that second arch.

Burry Port is an amazing place to go at sun down, especially when that time conicides with abstract patterns across the sands created by the ebbing tide.
