This Trip to Chicago Inspired My Love of Architectural and Urban Photography

Post image

Chicago, Illinois, USA, February 1997.

The start of my photography journey, in terms of it having a positive effect on my mental health was when I returned from a trip with my father to Chicago, USA in February 1997.

I had taken a small compact 35 film camera and wanted to capture some of the scenes from the trip, largely as a memory reference point, but also to show others.

With such an inspiring ‘canvas’ to work with I quickly started to use up film stock.

The Chicago skyline from the Observation deck of the Hancock Tower at about 350m high, the Willis (Sears) Tower dominating.

I also found during the trip that I wanted to capture images that were not just documentary, but that had an inherent aesthetic, and to extenuate and draw attention to the aspects unique to the place and my experience of it.

‘Skyscrapers’!

Looking up at the 350m Hancock Tower from Michigan Avenue.

Wow, I was awestruck, the sheer scale overwhelmed me, and I became desperate to somehow capture the feeling with photographs.

I was pleased with the process and the results.

I recently scanned in the original 6x4 prints at a faily low resolution, I hope to one day find the negatives and get some proper scans made. For now I have reprocessed the print scans with Photoshop as best I can, it was cheap film so the colour on some has been a challenge!

Here is a gallery:

A few shots of the city skyline from near the SHED Aquarium:

Around the city streets:

Navy Pier:

A statue in Grant Park:

In the SHED Aqauarium:

A few from the suburbs:

A few from taxi rides:

The Willis (Sears) Tower:

Views from the Willis Tower Skydeck at 450m high.

The Hancock Tower:

From the 10th floor hotel next door:

Views from the Hancock Tower Skydeck at 350m:

In the Hancock Tower Resaurant:

When returning to my new adopted city of Birmingham, I sought to find similar feelings and capture the associated photographs.

Birmingham is not Chicago, but it became, for me, something else.

The city is not full of incredible skyscrapers, but it is full of so much more!

People have hobbies, special interests, mine became urbanscape photography.

I began to discover the city of Birmingham and found that I developed a positive perception of the place and its massive diversity on so many levels. I grew up in London and the south-east and had a typical view of cities ‘up-north’ but not having actually experienced any properly.

I knew people had a dim view of Birmingham on a national level, and having started to live there I developed a feeling of indignation, the city had a bad reputation, but that this was largely unjustified.

I enjoyed capturing photos of the city but developed a motivation to use them as a way of dispelling the negative myths about it.

The Construction of the Octagon at Paradise - December 2022 Update

Post image

Big news for a big project!

The core is out of the ground and there are some outer columns installed, all now visable above the hordings around the site. The building will seem bulkier in the early stages of construction we think, until it gets above 100 metres when it will start to look much thiner but very tall!

King Kong back where he belongs - unveiling day!

Post image

Following all the excitement, Friday 22nd July, 2022 was finally here. Crowds gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Yes, King Kong is back in the city, and he's even bigger than before!

Enjoy our wonderful gallery of photos compiled with the help of our community and followers of Birmingham Gems.

Related

The Birmingham Gems team arrived early to get a few shots of the King before the ceremony.

This giant of a sculpture modelled on the original King Kong is over 7 metres tall.  He's impressive and the artwork is wonderful!

Nicholas Monro, the sculptor behind the original statue of King Kong, made of fibre-glass and displayed in Birmingham 50 years ago, was represented at the ceremony by his two sons Joe and Claud.

Sculptors RoboCarv worked with Mr Monro and his family to create the replica which is significantly bigger than the 1970s original.
